Celebrating the Year of the Dog

As Western families begin packing away their Christmas trees and sweeping up stray confetti from New Year’s Eve parties, Chinese families begin ramping up for Chinese New Year.

This means pulling out all the stops and activating all hands on deck to prepare the necessary banquet arrnagements, ancestral offerings, and neighbourhood parades (just to name a few of the festivities).

The Wong’s Association was fortunate to have a great turnout at this year’s Spring Festival Parade in Chinatown, with youth and elders walking alongside one another and representing the many generations that form our historic club. It was a chilly day, but the cheers of parade attendees and the cackle of firecrackers lining the streets kept spirits high.

It was wonderful to see so many new and familiar faces in the community that day. A number of families came up to join our post-parade lunch celebration and fill their bellies with delicious Chinese fare (a must-do during Chinese New Years).

A couple of weeks later, the Wong’s Benevolent Association held our annual Spring Festival banquet at Floata Seafood Restaurant, where we were treated to another feast of traditional Chinese cuisine. The Hon Hsing Athletic Club also gave a fabulous performance, showcasing some of their top performers.

Meet your Wong’s Association 2018 Directors. Stay tuned for more events to come!
